A Chennai woman has been arrested for the murder of her 18-day-old infant after she slammed the baby to death. Her initial version of the story was that she had apparently taken the infant to a nearby hospital on November 12, complaining that she began to choke while she was being fed, where she was declared dead. However, the police had filed a case under section 174 CrPC after suspicion over the death and sent the body to Stanley Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.
Autopsy report suggested that the baby had died of internal bleeding in the head, and not choking. Further probing of Celestine revealed that she had allegedly slammed the baby on the floor twice, which caused the internal bleeding and subsequent death since she was angry after finding out that her husband had been visiting his first wife and their 3-year-old daughter, whom he had promised to leave after his marriage to Celestine.
