In a high-speed police chase that ensued early Monday morning, Chennai Police managed to chase a thief and retrieve Rs 1.56 crores from him. The police officers in Kotturpuram saw the man engaging in suspicious activity at midnight on Sunday. When they tried to stop him, the man fled on his bike. The patrol team then chased the man for a long distance. At one juncture, he lost his balance at a speed breaker dropping three bags. These were found to have stacks of Rs. 500 notes.
Footage from CCTV cameras has been collected in order to trace the thief. At the same time, a complaint of a theft of Rs 1.56 crores from businessman M. Balasubramaniam’s house in Saidapet has been filed. On Monday morning when the maid came to his house, she found the door open and things scattered around. CCTV cameras near his house show a biker emerging with bags from his street.
Balasubramaniam had sold a property and had received Rs 2 crore of the sum due in cash. Rs 17 lakh and gold ornaments were left untouched in the same room. The police are investigating if the crime has been committed by an insider or outsider and how the thief knew of the large amount of money kept by the businessman.
