A 24-year-old post graduate student from the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital died by suicide after jumping off the third floor of the men's hostel.
The deceased, identified as Kannan, joined in May as a first year postgraduate student in orthopaedics at the Stanley Medical College after finishing his undergraduation from the Government Thanjavur Medical College. He jumped to his death from the third floor of the men's hostel on Monday at 4.20 am. "He was on non-COVID-19 duty. He finished work last night and went to the hostel. He had dinner with fellow PGs," one of the hospital staff reportedly told a news agency. He was found by his friends lying on the ground with multiple fractures. He was immediately rushed to the ICU of the hospital, where he breathed his last a few minutes later.
No suicide note has been retrieved from the student's room and upon initial inquiry, it was apparently determined that neither the professors nor his classmates have any idea as to why he decided to take the extreme step. However, some of them suspect that Kannan was under stress due to personal matters. Further investigation of the matter is currently underway.
