In a tragic turn of events, a cab driver from Chennai committed suicide after being verbally harassed by a couple of traffic police officers. He posted a video on social media before taking the drastic step briefing on what prompted him to take his own life.
The victim, identified as 25-year-old Rajesh Murthy, was an NTL taxi driver from Chennai. According to a government railway official, Murthy killed himself by jumping in front of a train near the Maraimalai Nagar railway station. In the disheartening video he recorded before the suicide, he stated that a traffic police officer had abused him verbally while he was parked outside DLF (which was not even a no-parking zone) in the presence of a female customer. He mentioned several such instances involving constant harassment from the officials that made his life miserable. He also mentioned the ordeals of having to be a cab driver and all the trouble they have to go through on a daily basis.
Initially, the case was closed after the reason for his suicide was cited as personal. The video was retrieved from the back-up memory of his phone, reopening the case. A police commissioner from Chennai has reportedly appointed a senior officer to verify the claims made in the video and report on the same within a week.
