It has been said that the Southern Railway will most probably begin the circular suburban train services connecting Arakkonam and Chengalpet within the next 10 days. As per sources, the proposal for running a 12-car EMU and one MEMU service is awaiting the approval of the general manager, as the model code of conduct is in place. The Southern Railway had completed linking Arakkonam-Takkolam detour line to the Arakkonam-Jolarpet main line.
Between April 11 and 15, may express trains and suburban trains were cancelled for commissioning work of the non-interlocking block. As of now as the model code of conduct is in place, circular suburban services will not be announced, and special trains will be run now, which will get regularised after the election results are announced on May 23.The suburban services existing now from Chennai Beach run to Chengalpet and Tirumalpur, and a non electrified further link to Arakkonam.
A detour electrified line between Takkolam and Arakkonam was completed and commissioned by Railway Boardm, after the defence ministry had given 60 crores for the same. The Circular services through the Chengalpet-Arakkonam section will be beneficial and help development of Vellore and Kancheepuram districts which are linked by the new line.
