In what might be sweet news to Jallikkattu supporters and activities, the Supreme Court of India accorded its permission by giving the ‘green signal’ to holding the famed annual event next year (2018) in Tamil Nadu.

Turning down animal rights organization PETA’s (People for Ethnic Treatment of Animals) petition seeking a ban on conducting the Tamil traditional sport of Jallikkattu, the apex Court gave its nod to Tamil Nadu to hold the event but advised the State to be cautious in doing so.

PETA’s petition stated that bulls were being ‘harmed’ during Jallikkattu, an allegation which had been denied and disproved on many occasions by Jallikkattu activists and organizers. Animal Welfare Board of India’s (AWBI) initiatives had earlier resulted in bulls being included in the list of animals barred by the Centre for public exhibition.

Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a resolution to conduct the annual event and later enacted a Law which was later granted the Presidential nod. With the Supreme Court agreeing to hold the Jallikkattu event, apprehensions of people and youths about holding the event next year have been dispelled.
