While the film industry is grappling with the demise of music legend Balamuralikrishna, comes the news about the untimely demise of director K.Subash (57). Sources say that the filmmaker has passed away on this morning in a private hospital in Chennai due to kidney failure.

Subash is the son of director Krishnan in the dual director Krishnan-Panju. He started his career working as an assistant director to Mani Ratnam in the films 'Nayagan' and 'Agni Natchathiram'. His first film as a director was 'Kaliyugam' starring Prabhu and Amala that released in 1988. However the film that gave him a strong foothold in Kollywood was the blockbuster 'Sathriyan' which is also considered as a landmark in Captain Vijayakanth's career. The film was produced and penned by Subash's mentor Mani Ratnam.

Subash went on to direct films with leading heroes of 1990s Sathyaraj (Bramma), Prabhu (Kaliyugam, Uthama Purushan), Prabhu Deva (Ninaithen Vandhai, Ezhaiyin Sirippil and 123) and Partiban (Abhimanu, Sabash). He directed Ajith Kumar in the latter's formative years in 'Pavithra' and 'Nesam'. He also directed the Hindi remake of 'Bramma' with Govinda. In all he has directed 20 films.

In the last few years Subash became prominent in Bollywood as a story/script writer. He wrote the story for director Rohit Shetty's 'Chennai Express' which had Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. The film is an all class blockbuster across the country and globe.

Since then he has penned the script/story for a few more popular Hindi films such as 'Entertainment', 'Dilwale' and 'Houseful 3'.

Subash is survived by wife Sudha and daughters Dhanusha and Punitha.
