Chandrettan Evideya is a delightful movie which is a take on familial relationships. It is a very simple tale told in a light manner. It is unlike some of the usual Dileep movies, which has amble farce and slapstick. In that aspect, ‘Chandrettan Evidya’ has definitely reigned in the comic elements. Whatever comedy is present is situational and according to the character and environment.
The movie has a very small premise that has been told engagingly. It is about a man’s equation with his wife and a mistress. The story is about Chandramohan who is the assistant section officer at the Legislative Assembly. He is also a dance critic and reviewer. He leads a very care free life at a hostel at Thiruvananthapuram. Chandran has a few friends Bhramasree Narayanan (Suraaj Venjaramoodu), who is an astrologer, Shekarettan (Mukesh) a journalist and rake and Sumesh, a librarian, who is also his roommate.
Chandran’s wife Sushama is a BSNL employee and lives at their home in Thrissur. They have a seven year old son. Sushama is a very possessive woman who keeps tabs on her husband every now and then, which irks Chanran no end. The plot becomes thicker when a doctor and dancer Geetanjali aka Anjali approaches Chandran for a matter. Into the plot comes the element of fantasy as we have Chandran believing in a life before, when he lost the love of his life Vasanthamalikka, whom he sees in Geethanjali.
There are the elements relating to astrology in the movie, and one needs to really think to get
the sequences’ import. The plot is all about how Chandran sorts out the women in his life. Director Siddarth Bharathan has done a wonderful job of getting the feel of the movie just right. It has all the trappings of an entertainer without going overboard. The idea has been communicated well in the movie. The movie could appear a bit dense in parts as the satire and sarcasm need not be understood by everyone. Cinematography by Shyju Khalid is apt and the capital city has come out very well. Editing is also done well. Songs by Prasanth Pillai are not out of place in the narrative and ‘Vasanthamallike’ stands out. Santhosh Aechikanam’s story does stand out and the plot and dialogues are very good.
The performance of Dileep is commendable as Charettan. His happy go lucky character, his confusions, expressions of sometimes being cuckolded by wife and subtle humour have all been done well. Anusree as Sushama has also performed well as a nagging wife. Chandran’s friends played by Mukesh, Suraaj etc too are apt. Namitha Pramaod has added some glitz and glamour as Geethanjali, to the ordinary lives that is portrayed.
Watch this movie without expecting a usual Dileep fare. ‘Chandretan Evideya’ is definitely a good watch that can leave you entertained. Siddarth Bharathan has nailed it with this simple tale.
