A report by a news agency says that the Union Home Ministry has sought a report from the West Bengal government over the bouts of violence in the State since 2016. Several political activists have been killed by intimidating goons and mobs.
The Centre has asked the government what measures it has taken to "contain the political violence". The state, governed by Mamata Banerjee, witnessed political violence in the run up to and during the recent elections in April and May.
"Pointing out the growing number election-related incidents and political violence and casualties over 4 years from 2016 to 2019, the Ministry of Home Affairs, in an advisory issued to the state government, said that the "unabated violence over the years is evidently a matter of deep concern".
