Centre sanctions three more national highways in Tamil Nadu

The Centre has sanctioned (or converted) three more national highways to Tamil Nadu.
National highways in the country are maintained by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), an autonomous body functioning under the Govt. of India’s Ministry of Road Transport &. The two-way national highways in the country measure a total of a whopping 1,00,475 km.
NH-7 happens to be the lengthiest national highway with 2369 km as it connects Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Kanniyakumari down South in Tamil Nadu. National highways form a mere 2% of the total roads in the country but handle 40% of the total traffic.
As per the Centre’s recent announcement, the roads onnecting Mechery-Mettur-Sitharbhawani and culminating in Erode, Ayodhapattinam-Uthangarai-Tirupathur and culminating in Vaniyambadi and the Thanjavur-Kunnam and connecting Athur have been declared as the three ‘new’ national highways in the State.
