Centre declares Sep 17 as Hyderabad Liberation Day

The Union Home Ministry made a significant announcement on Tuesday, declaring September 17 as 'Hyderabad Liberation Day' to be commemorated annually. This decision comes as a poignant reminder of the historical significance surrounding the liberation of Hyderabad from the Nizam's rule, which persisted for 13 months beyond India's independence on August 15, 1947.
The liberation, achieved through the resolute 'Operation Polo' on September 17, 1948, stands as a testament to the valor and sacrifice of those who fought to free the region. Responding to the fervent demands of the people, the government has chosen to honor the memory of these brave martyrs and ignite the spirit of patriotism among the youth by marking this day annually.
The struggle for liberation was not without its challenges. The Razakars, advocating for Hyderabad to either join Pakistan or assert its independence as a Muslim dominion, posed formidable resistance against integration with the Indian Union. However, the indomitable spirit of the people prevailed as they courageously confronted the atrocities perpetrated by the Razakars, ultimately securing Hyderabad's annexation into the Union of India.
The steadfast leadership of figures like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, then Home Minister, was instrumental in orchestrating the military action that led to Hyderabad's integration. In recent years, the Narendra Modi government has consistently observed September 17 as 'Hyderabad Liberation Day,' with notable figures such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah gracing the commemorations.
However, amidst these solemn observances, criticisms have been directed towards the state government for its reluctance to officially recognize and celebrate the day. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in past addresses, lamented the state government's apparent disregard for this pivotal moment in history, attributing it to political considerations.
As the central government continues to commemorate Telangana Liberation Day, its objectives remain clear: to educate future generations about the struggles for freedom, honor the heroes of the liberation movement, and contribute to the state's reconstruction. The significance of Hyderabad Liberation Day serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made and the indomitable spirit that defines the Indian nation.
