Centres decision on releasing convicts in Rajiv Gandhi murder case

The central government has communicated to the Supreme Court that the seven accused convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi murder case cannot be released. Earlier in 2016, the Tamil Nadu government had stated that it was ready to release the convicts.

After the state government’s order was challenged, SC sought the opnion of the central government in this regards. The affidavit also noted that the President also had rejected a proposal to release the convicts in Rajiv Gandhi murder case. It also stated that the release would set a ‘dangerous precedent’.

The seven convicts are serving life term sentences. It should be also noted that three years back in 2015, the centre had stated that the convicts cannot be released without the centre’s consent.
