Mexico stands shaken by a violent earthquake on the anniversary of the tragic 8.0-magnitude 1985 quake. The death toll has gone up to 216 in Mexico City and surrounding states. Several are reported to be trapped under collapsed buildings.
The country is facing a “national emergency” as this 7.1-magnitude earthwork hits less than a fortnight after an earthquake of magnitude 8.1 hit the southern coast, killing more than 90. Soldiers, rescuers and civilians of all ages have joined hands to help retrieve people from building ruins. All regular operations were shut down since the quake made power poles topple, blocking many roads. Several of those rescued had initially thought it was a routine drill conducted every year, to remind citizens of the 1985 quake, before the quakes got more and more violent.
