Celebrities mourn the demise of Captain Vijayakanth

The news of the passing of actor-turned-politician Captain Vijayakanth has left everyone deeply moved. The iconic 71-year-old, renowned for his impactful cop roles, was admitted to the hospital for a routine checkup but was later diagnosed with pneumonia and tested positive for Covid-19. Despite being placed on ventilator support due to breathing difficulties, he succumbed on Thursday, marking the end of a prolonged period of declining health.

In a gesture of respect, morning shows in theaters across Tamil Nadu have been canceled. Stars and fans alike took to social media to express their grief and share condolences.

Vijayakanth, the founder and chief of DMDK, stood out in the realm of actors turned politicians, echoing the legacy of MGR. He achieved notable success in the political arena, starting his own party and serving as the Leader of Opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly from 2011.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow, acknowledging Vijayakanth's legendary status in the Tamil film world and his dedicated public service in politics. He recalled fond interactions with the departed leader, highlighting the lasting impact he made on Tamil Nadu's political landscape.

AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami conveyed his condolences, acknowledging Vijayakanth's contributions both in public life and the field of art. He extended deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and DMDK members.

Various political leaders, including former Health Minister Vijayabaskar and Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai, shared their sorrow over the loss of Captain Vijayakanth, recognizing his philanthropy and contributions to the film industry.

Noted actor Kamal Haasan penned a heartfelt note praising Vijayakanth's humanity, innovative ideas in politics, and fearless courage. Other celebrities like Trisha, Jr NTR, Vikram, and Sonu Sood also expressed their condolences, remembering Vijayakanth's kindness and influential presence.

Born as Narayanan Vijayaraj Alagarswami in 1952 in Madurai, Vijayakanth was a distinguished figure in Tamil cinema, earning the moniker "Captain" from his 1991 film "Captain Prabhakaran." His impactful roles, especially as a righteous police officer, made him a beloved figure in the industry. His passing marks the end of an era in Tamil cinema and politics.
