Since last May, Manipur has been experiencing brutal violence and riots. The nation can't help but be in shock right now. A video clip of an incident that happened on May 3 was recently released, adding more to the horror and outrage.
For the past two and a half months, riots have gripped Manipur, triggered by demands from the Maithei community to be granted tribal status. In response, the Kuku and Nasa tribal people in that state protested against this demand, sparking a violent clash.
Brazen acts of violence were vented during the riots against the tribals resulting in destruction of dozens of houses, vandalizing of commercial premises, and horrifying sexual assaults.Ironically, the death toll that resulted from this violence is 135.
After violence escalated, calls to quash the riots were made and for the central government's intervention. The nation has been chilled by disturbing photos and videos from riot events, and a recent video in particular captured the harrowing sight of young women dragged naked on the road, further sparking public anger.
In the footage, many youths from Maithei community were seen dragging two women in their 20s and subjecting them to brutal assault and sexual violence. It was reported that while dragging these Kuku women from their house, assailants set the house ablaze and tragically attacked and stabbed her brother who triedTo intervene.
This shocking case haunts the Indian population, with celebrities and social activists alike expressing their shock and condemnation.
Bollywood’s leading Actor Akshay Kumar tweets, "I was shocked to see the video of violence against women in Manipur. Disgusted. I hope the culprits get severe punishment. No one would think of doing such a cruel act."
Another prominent actor, Sanjay Dutt, expressed his hope for severe punishment to the culprits because such despicable acts would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The incident also forced actor Sonu Sood to take a stance on the matter, with his response touching lakhs of hearts as he emphasized that it was humanity that bound people together and not their differences.
Actress Richa Chadha said in a tweet that the incident was "disgraceful, cruel and illegal". Manipuri singer Renuka Sahane too questioned lack of intervention to stop atrocities.
Actor and politician Kamal Haasan said the breakdown of constitutional machinery in Manipur has caused concern, adding that President's rule may be necessary.
Director Pa Ranjith, known for his vocal stand on important issues, took to Twitter today to express his anger over the riots and huge displacement along with the violence it has caused.
In addition, several Kollywood celebrities – Priya Bhavani Shankar, G.V. Prakash, Pradeep Ranganathan, and Kasthuri amongst others have also come out in condemning the incident before speaking on the lack of legal action that was taken against the perpetrators.
As the monsoon session of Parliament begins, hopes remain high that a resolution will be arrived at to alleviate the violence in Manipur and give justice to the victims of this tragic and appalling attack.
