Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that if he cannot stop namaz on the streets during Eid, he has no right to stop Janmashtami celebrations at police stations. The background of this statement is the briefing that police had given him regarding the Kanwar Yatra.

The police had told the CM during the briefing that microphones, DJs and music systems would not be allowed during the Yatra, to which the CM replied that the Yatra was a festival, not a funeral procession that needed to be conducted in silence. He went on to add to his earlier statement by stating how nobody in India would be stopped from celebrating their respective religious festivals, be it a Christian, Islamic or other festival, as long as everything was within the limits of the law.
