Case filed with HC against Coast Guard for attacking Tamil fishermen

A case has been filed against the Coast Guard for reportedly attacking Tamil fishermen in a shocking and unprovoked manner.
The incident occurred around 04:00 p.m. on Monday (13th November) when a few fishermen hailing from Rameswaram were fishing near the coast, a few nautical miles away from the shore. Coast Guard personnel fired at them using rubber bullets, injuring Pitchai Arokiadas of Thangachimadam on left elbow and Johnson of the same village on his left shoulder. Fishermen were also hit with wooden logs.
Incident of Indian Coast Guard attacking Tamil fishermen has sent shock waves among the fishing community living along the coastal Districts. A case has been filed with the High Court of Madras requesting it to inquire into the incident.
Advocate Maurya filed a writ petition with the High Court of Madras requesting it to take suo moto action in the incident based in media reports. It may be noted that the High Court is said to have given its consent to the Fishermen’s Association to file a case on the issue of attack carried out on Tamil fishermen by Coast Guard personnel.
