Indian cricket team bowler Mohammed Shami was recently abused verbally by a section of people online following India's loss to Pakistan in their opening match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Earlier, we brought you that Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammed Rizwan has voiced out supporting the Indian pacer.
Now, Team India's skipper Virat Kohli has broken the silence on the issue and said that attacking someone over religious differences is a pathetic thing. In his statement, Virat states, "To me attacking someone over their religion is the most pathetic thing a human being can do. Everyone has the right to voice their opinion, but I personally have never even thought of discriminating [against] someone over their religion."
"People take out their frustrations because they have no understanding of the fact that Mohammed Shami has won India n number of matches...If people can overlook that and his passion for the country, Honestly, I don't want to waste even one minute of my life on them. We stand by him fully. we back him 200%. Our brotherhood cannot be shaken," the Indian captain added.
Several Indian cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Irfan Pathan and Virender Sehwag came out in support of Shami as well. "When we support #TeamIndia, we support every person who represents Team India. @MdShami11 is a committed, world-class bowler. He had an off day like any other sportsperson can have. I stand behind Shami & Team India," Sachin wrote.
