Captain Vijayakanth made a huge impact on his political entry thirteen years back in 2005 launching his party Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam which garnered ten percent vote. Later in 2009 the Puratchi Kalaigniar won 29 seats in the assembly elections and became the opposition leader.
Of late Vijayakanth is suffering from thyroid related ailments which are keeping him from active politics though he makes sure that he meets his cadres and followers from time to time. Last Saturday saw Vijaya Prabhakaran the eldest son of Vijayakanth taking the microphone in a party meet in Kacheepuram and won many hearts with his maiden political speech. Party workers are delighted about the Vice-Captain as they call Vijaya Prabhakaran leading them and are saying they have been infused by new energy. The young businessman and sports enthusiast said that he sought the blessings of his father before leaving home and the Captain told him to make speech short as rains were predicted and he wanted the ladies and children to reach home safely. His next message to his followers was that he will be back soon to meet and serve them.
