It has been 40 years since Captain Vijayakanth made his foray into Tamil cinema and his political party DMDMK organized a grand event to celebrate which was attended by Sathyaraj, S.A. Chandrasekhar, R.K. Selvamani and others. Speaking at the occassion, S.A. Chandrasekhar who has made 17 films with Vijayakanth shared many interesting details about their friendship.
S.A. Chandrasekhar revealed that when Vijay's debut movie 'Naalaya Theerpu' directed by him failed at the box office he struck upon the idea that the best way to take his son to the masses is by getting him to share the screen with an established hero. SAC had called Vijayakanth to ask for an appointment to meet him but the busy actor within minutes had rushed to his mentor's house. When S.A.C requested the Captain to star in 'Sendhoorapandi',he immediately gave him the dates without even listening to the story.
The film went on to become a hit and Vijay reached the masses through it and today he is one of the topmost stars of Kollywood. Chandrasekhar has acknowledged the contribution of Vijayakanth in making his son's career a success and that too without taking any remuneration for it.
