After bus drivers announced a strike owing to failed negotiations with the state regarding their salary, the city’s public transport has been stumped since last evening. As office goers stood stranded with only a few buses plying, the situation seems to not have changed this morning as well.

Making use of the circumstances, reportedly auto rickshaws, share autos and the like have increased their fare costs exorbitantly. This has lead to the swarming of commuters at the city’s local train stations and metro.

The bus strike has gained traction in other cities in the state such as Coimbatore, Salem, Trichy and Madurai as well. While the Transport Minister has requested the drivers to resume their duties conforming to the state’s salary allocation, trade unions seem to be disappointed and hence continue to be stubborn with their strike.

Reportedly, the government is on a war footing to hire drivers based on daily wages to combat the transportation crisis that the strike has brought upon the common populace.
