The pressing need for women's security has resulted in technological innovations over the years. Manufacturers, law enforcement agencies and the governments at large have been involved in this.
Latest, the students of an Engineering college in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, have invented a sandal-drone security system equipped with GPS. This drone, if scaled up, can be a boon for women. "The system is equipped with a sandal that gives an electric shock and it can be used for self-defence. The system sends the user's location to police once a distress signal is sent, post which the drone will fly towards the user using the GPS. It will sound an alarm so that people who are nearby can come forward to help. The drone will also record video that will help police in their investigation later on," the students have been quoted as saying by a news agency.
A demerit is that the efficacy of the drone depends on whether the nearby passers-by/strangers are willing to come to the rescue of the woman in danger. Lack of awareness about the technology can lead to confusion.
