While India has selected Amit Masurkar's 'Newton' as the official entry for the Oscars, for the very first time Britain has selected a Pakistani film 'My Pure Land', an Urdu language feature film to be its official contender for the best foreign language film category.
The film directed by British-Pakistani director Sarmad Masud revolves around the story of how a mother and her two daughters fight against an army of bandits to retain their rural land in Pakistan.
The movie is based on actual events and stars Pakistani actress/dancer Sohai Ali Abro in the lead role. The film was shot in difficult conditions with the crew sometimes having to wade through armed civilian areas in Pakistan.
'My Pure Land' which is a female-centric movie with strong feminist themes is also the first Urdu language film to be sent for the Oscars by Britain.
