A famous bridge named the Majerhat Bridge has collapsed in Kolkata earlier today. It's one of the busiest parts in the city. Early reports say that many commuters, walkers and vehicles are trapped. In no time, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ordered an investigation.
"Watching scenes of Majerhat bridge #Kolkata collapse. Devastating. Rescue teams, disaster management teams, Police CP, firefighters already reach the spot. Locals join. Rescue operations on. Prayers for those affected. Difficult to gauge the enormity of tragedy as yet looking at visuals," Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien has said.
At least 5 people might have died, early estimates say. At least 20 people are said to have been trapped.
The tragedy took place near an Army unit. So, despite no request from the State govt, army personnel have reached the spot to help in rescue operations.
