Beijing has witnessed its first Covid-19 cases in two months. Source? A meat market.

As many as six Covid-19 cases have been registered on Saturday, leading to parts of China's capital city getting placed under lockdown.

"People were prevented from leaving their homes at 11 residential estates in south Beijing's Fengtai district after most of the cases were linked to a nearby meat market," NDTV has quoted city officials as saying.

Xin Fa Di meat market is said to be the source of the new cases. "This is a massive wholesale market, reportedly the largest in Asia. It’s not unlike the type of wholesale market you would see in any country. Xin Fa Di Market is said to supply 80% of Beijing’s vegetables and meat," tweeted Stephen McDonell.

There are rumours that the virus came from a fish at the meat market. How certainly true is the claim? "That traces of the coronavirus were found on a chopping board used for “imported” fish doesn’t mean the virus came from the fish. It could just be that the person chopping it was infected?" says McDonell, BBC correspondent in China.
