The Supreme Court has today decriminalized homosexuality (Section 377 of Indian Penal Code) in delivering a historic verdict. The LGBT community has welcomed the verdict.

A petition against the regressive Section 377 was heard by a five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. Only unnatural sexual offences against minors and animals (read sodomy and bestiality) are now criminal in the country.

In giving the judgement, the SC has made some progressive observations. "Such beautifully worded opinions. Chief Justice of India reads from the judgements: 'Take me as I am', 'Look for the rainbows in the clouds', 'Denial of self-expression is like death'," notes Shilpa Rathnam, a columnist.
