The Boys Locker Room case is something you will hear for the next few days. It's an eye-opener of a case because it exposes the normalization of rape culture in India.
What is the case about?
Bois Locker Room is the name of an Instagram chat group comprising of 21 school students from Delhi. Almost all of them are teens and they have been caught sharing "objectionable pictures of minor girls and discussing illegal acts including rape" in the chat room.
A school girl from Delhi recently outed a screenshot of one of the objectionable chats. "A group of south Delhi guys aged 17-18 types have this Instagram group chat named 'boys locker room' where they objectify and morph pictures of girls their age. Two boys from my school are a part of it," she said.
Following this, the Delhi Commission of Women issued a notice to both Instagram and Delhi Police asking them to look into the online group named 'bois locker room'.
One of the teens has already been detained. His mobile phone has been seized.
Since they are juvenile, they will be tried under relevant IPC laws and IT Act laws. They could face a jail term.
Reacting to the news, Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker wrote, "The case is a telling tale of how toxic masculinity starts young! Underage boys gleefully planning how to rape and gangrape minor girls. Parents and teachers must address this with those kids. Not enough to ‘hang rapists’. we must attack the mentality that creates rapists!"
