From the past
In it's second week, MAAN GAYE MUGHAL-E-AZAM disappeared completely from the radar while MUMBAI MERI JAAN too suffered a 60% fall. For a film like MUMBAI MERI JAAN to survive, it had to do an AAMIR and sustain itself at the box office. However, ROCK ON came like a hurricane and the serious theme of MUMBAI MERI JAAN didn't help it's cause much either which meant that only 90 lakhs were added to it's total. At 3.25 crores, the film has covered it's cost and become a decent earner but that's about it. It should enjoy a good market on DVD circuit though.
PHOONK too took a fall (60%) but it's more than healthy first week meant that it is pretty much in the contention of clearing the 10 crores milestone. With 2.5 crores coming in and a total that reads 9 crores, PHOONK is a big success for Ram Gopal Varma and it won't be surprising if he kick starts a 'phoonk' franchise from this point on. The film did very good business in Mumbai with 50 lakhs coming in though Delhi could gather only 25 lakhs. Nevertheless, the job is more than done for PHOONK which should now see a quick DVD release to enjoy a continued audience for itself.
BACHNA AE HASEENO took a 60% fall but in the process made sure than Siddharth Anand enjoys his yet another 30 crores + success. His SALAAM NAMASTE and TA RA RUM PUM had both done 30-35 crores business and BACHNA AE HASEENO has reached the 35 crores mark in 3 weeks flat after the third week ended up fetching 3.75 crores. Though 40 crores is certainly out of reach, the least this film has ended up doing is earn some credibility back for YRF with Siddharth Anand keeping his 'semi-hit' tag intact.
GOD TUSSI GREAT HO hasn't been able to survive at all though, hence making it three flops in a row for Priyanka Chopra after LOVE STORY 2050 and most recently CHAMKU. With a 85% crash and only 40 lakhs being added to the total, GOD TUSSI GREAT HO has ended it's run at 14.5 crores. Meanwhile SINGH IS KINNG continues it's reasonable run with a 60% fall in it's fourth week. The quantum of weekly collections for SINGH IS KINNG have been such that even a 60% fall doesn't prevent the movie from earning respectable numbers for itself. With 3.25 crores more coming in, SINGH IS KINNG now stands at 73 crores with a Superhit tag for itself.
In the future
This weekend would be yet another instance of a three films release. These are 1920, THE LAST LEAR and RU BA RU. None of the three films is expected to open more than 20%-30% though 1920 has the best chances of showing an escalation and performing well over the weekend due to it's thrill and chill effect. Vikram Bhatt has made the film primarily with newcomers while the music hasn't picked on as well. Due to these reasons the start would be slow but if promos are indication, Vikram has yet another success up his sleeves after RAAZ. THE LAST LEAR is basically an English movie and is expected to find quite some appreciation coming it's way. However, it isn't a kind of film which earns it's verdict after a one week run and it has to be seen how far does the word of mouth lead it to. As for RU BA RU, the film doesn't stand much chance since it is literally coming announced. An apparent of IF ONLY, RU-BA-RU may just go unnoticed.
