With half-a-dozen months gone this year, it is time to look back on how the films have fared at the box office in Kollywood.
Of course, the two outright winners have been Chandramukhi and anniyan (well on its way).
Films like Vijay's Thirupachi, director Ameer's Ram, Prakashraj starrer Arindhum Ariyamalum, Shaam-Arya starrer Ullam Ketkumae and Shankar's home production Kadhal were the few movies that had a decent run this year.
The top five films of this year so far are
1. Chandramukhi
After the flopshow in Baba, Rajnikanth has spectacularly bounced back with Chandramukhi directed by P Vasu and produced by actor Prabhu for Sivaji Productions.
The movie, a remake of Kannada hit Aapthamithra. Besides Rajnikanth, the movie had Jyothika, Nayantra, Prabhu, Vadivelu and Nasser and the music by Vidyasagar was a highlight.
2. Anniyan
Director Shankar's magnum opus, Anniyan starring Vikram was a mega budget movie. It had all the trademark grandeur of Shankar. This was further heightened by the astounding histrionics of Vikram. Vikram plays a youth affected by Multiple Personality Disorder. The movie, which had a fantastic opening, is expected to collect more.
3. Thirupachi
Vijay starrer Thirupachi is one of the successful films this year for it had all the commercial ingredients at the right mix. Starring Trisha, Mallika and host of villains, the movie was directed by debutant Perarasu. The film, despite its violence, has had good collections.
4. Kadhal
Director Shankar's production venture directed by his associate Balaji Sakthivel, Kadhal was all about romance between a poor boy and a rich upper caste girl. Starring Bharath and Sandhya, Kadhal had a good run bringing laurels for the entire team. Debutant Joshua Sridhar scored the music.
5. Ram Actor Jeeva considered a jinxed actor till last year came up with a splendid performance in Ram. Directed by Ameer, the movie had Gajala, Malayalam actor Murali and Rehman in the cast. Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja was a highlight.
6. Arindhum Ariyamalum
The movie starring Arya, Prakashraj and Navdeep in the cast and directed by Vishnuvardhan, did an average business. The movie was a mix of action, romance and humour and had brought stardom to Arya.
