First weekend performance of latest release

BLACK & WHITE wasn't expected to open well but a shockingly poor response has got another red in Bollywood's report card this year. There were empty houses all around for this Subhash Ghai film which in spite of being reasonably well promoted couldn't entice an audience.

Though initial reviews were good, as the weekend progressed, negative reviews around the film starting piling up. For a film like this which relies on word of mouth, critical appreciation was a must but sadly that didn't quite happen for BLACK & WHITE. Result is that the film has failed in the opening weekend itself and would struggle to even run at theaters in the second week, let aside earn any moolah!

Last week's movies

No new film was released over the weekend gone by.

From the past

JODHAA AKBAR is now a HIT! The film has shown an amazing sustaining power ever since it opened to just-about-good start three weeks back. JODHAA AKBAR has added approximate 9.5 crores further in the third week which means that now this UTV film has crossed the 48 crore mark. The film was close to 2 crores in Mumbai while Delhi too stood at 1 crore.

Gaining a clear HIT status for itself with the progress it has made over the days, JODHAA AKBAR would hit the 50 crores mark this week and would scale further heights as it enjoys an open fortnight all for itself before RACE strikes on 21st March. Also, since BLACK & WHITE has hardly turned out to be any competition, JODHAA AKBAR is now enjoying yet another open fortnight all for itself.

Even though the DVDs of MITHYA have already hit the stands, the film is continuing to get an audience for itself, though on the lower side. In it's fourth week, the film saw a 50% fall (reasonable) and added another 40 lakhs in it's kitty. At 5.25 crores and an above average tag for itself, MITHYA has turned out to be a dark horse in the first quarter of 2008. The film's run should end here but the team of MITHYA would be proud of the film's achievements and should continue to present the kind of stories which are truly different, original and yet entertaining!

SUNDAY isn't going away either. The film saw less than 40% fall in it's sixth week and though trade was much more than willing to write it off on the day of it's release, SUNDAY has survived to gather another 20 lakhs odd. At 22.5 crores, the film is an earner and is already registering good DVD sales.

Meanwhile TAARE ZAMEEN PAR has now moved up the charts to get back to #2 position. Besides JODHAA AKBAR, this Aamir Khan film was the only one to be doing good business as it's collections touched 50 lakhs. At just about 30% fall, the film is now just a few lakhs below the magical 60 crore mark. One more week and not just the movie should reach the milestone but also gear up for the DVD release. With 15 lakhs in the week gone by, WELCOME has touched the 76 crores mark as well.

In the future

There are no new notable films releasing this weekend.
