'Bombay Velvet' defies all predictions, proves to be a Disaster

The prediction has failed, and how. In this column it was stated that 'Bombay Velvet' would go on to net at least 10 crore on Day One. The barometer for such reasonable numbers, though not great by any means, was the opening of Roy which had stepped into double digits despite Ranbir being in a supporting role. However, all such predictions hit South when the D-day arrived. Though it had seemed that the Anurag Kashyap starrer would at least manage a face saving opening, none of that turned out to be true, what with empty houses greeting those select few who started stepping in sporadically.
Though it had seemed that the collections would improve as shows progressed in the evening, there was no respite as the word of mouth started trickling in. The film was hit on both counts, what with no opening and then poor word of mouth as well. Reviews from majority of critics further pulled down the film and as a result, the opening day collections were a measly 5.2 crore. The gravity of disaster can well be gauged by the fact that 'Besharam', the last rejected film of Ranbir Kapoor, had managed over 21 crore on Day One (yes, that's correct), and was still slammed by one and all.
No wonder, the situation didn't improve over the weekend and with just around 16 crore* in its kitty, the film has joined the list of All Time Disasters. The film has failed in a major way and ended up accumulating losses for all involved. For the industry, it has been a major blow and for Ranbir too this is a major shocker by all means. As for Anushka Sharma, she would soon move on to 'Dil Dhadakne Do' and hence has an opportunity to make audience forget all about Bombay Velvet with which she was associated for last four years.
* Final numbers awaited
