2011 – The 3 Cheers

The eventful year of 2011 sprung these 3 major surprises where the so called smallies sustained their edge over their towering oppositions…

Pyaar Ka Punchnama

This smart rom-com got lapped up by the youth and surprisingly it faced the giant called Ready bravely in its second week!! The movie opened low but gradually picked up by word of mouth and netted a cool 11.5 crores in its four week run. Many touted it to be a loser but this Luv Ranjan directed flick having all newcomers picked up and sustained. Producers Viacom where so impressed by the proceedings that they announced its sequel.

Chillar Party

The entry of Salman Khan’s production house SKBH Productions happened with this sweet little film which was released along with the much hyped Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Murder 2’. General opinion was that ‘Murder 2’ will be the audience choice and ‘Chillar Party’ will struggle.

But good for Bollywood and cine lovers... While ‘Murder ‘ was singing its success song, families in metros were also dancing to the ‘Chiller Party’ tune. The movie was a perfect family outing thanks to Nitish Tiwari and Vikas Bahl who made their debut with this as directors and did a commendable job.

Damadamm

You can either love Himesh Re3hammiya or hate him but you cannot ignore him. The singer with his tiny 3 crore budget flick made Shahrukh Khan and its people at Red Chillies the producers of over 100 crore ‘Ra.One’ wonder and scratch their heads.

This romantic comedy by debutant Swapna Waghmare starred Himesh Reshammiya, Sonal Sehgal and Purbi Joshi took an obvious slow start due to the presence of the much awaited and highly publicized SRK starrer ‘Ra.One’. ‘Damadamm’ got a 50 lakh opening but later as days passed by ‘Ra.One’ collections started declining and ‘Damadamm’ made its place at the ticket counter.

The movie ended up at Rs. 4 crore net!! This is what we call a pleasant surprise…
