The "Blue Beetle'' superhero film had a mixed weekend at North American theaters. It secured the top spot at the box office, dethroning "Barbie," but its $25.4 million debut was the lowest for a DC superhero film in recent times, excluding "Wonder Woman 1984." Starring Xolo Mariduena, the movie follows a college graduate with superhuman powers.
Despite lower ticket sales, "Blue Beetle" received positive reviews and strong overseas prospects. "Barbie," in its fifth week, earned $21.5 million, pushing its global total to $1.27 billion. Universal's historical drama "Oppenheimer" ranked third with $10.6 million and crossed the $700 million mark worldwide.
Paramount's animated "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" took fourth place with $8.4 million, featuring a star-studded voice cast. Universal's new comedy "Strays" came in fifth with $8.3 million, though its start was concerning given its $46 million budget.
