The Telangana government has declared Black Fungus as an epidemic. This came a day after the Director of Medical Education Ramesh Reddy suggested that it's not a matter of serious concern. Surely, there is a change in opinion.

Medically known as Mucormycosis, Black Fungus is now be a notifiable disease under Epidemics Diseases Act 1897 in the Telugu State. From today, all hospitals in the State are obligated to report every single suspected as well as confirmed case of Black Fungus to the State Health Department.

All hospitals and health centres have to follow the guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare for diagnosis and screening of the infection.

Medical superintendents of all government and private hospitals shall ensure strict compliance and send report on a daily basis to idsp@telangana.gov.in. Drug requests have to be mailed to the Department of Medical Education.

Last week, the Telangana government said that the Government ENT Hospital in Koti will be the Nodal Center for Black Fungus cases in the State. Those who use steroids recklessly during the covid infection are susceptible to the infection.

Rajasthan earlier this week became the first State to declare Black Fungus as an epidemic. More and more States are expected to follow. Andhra Pradesh has included Black Fungus under Arogya Sri.
