In what could turn out to be a game-changing move, the Narendra Modi government will be imposing a comprehensive ban on single-use plastic on October 2, which is Gandhi Jayanthi. "We learn that plastic bags, cups, small bottles, plates, straws and certain types of plastic products will be banned. It will be akin to demonetization. A shock therapy it will be," comments a social media influencer.
Both the manufacturing and import of such items will be curbed effectively through the ban, a report adds.
The usage of single-use plastic has been seen as hugely negative by environmentalists. With the Prime Minister taking up the issue of cleaning India of the menace of single-use plastic by 2022, perhaps a ban was always in the air.
Bollywood celebs such as Aamir Khan have supported the call for curbing the use of single-use plastic.
