A station house officer (SHO), Dilip Kumar Yadav of Kharik police station in Naugachia district of Bihar, was arrested due to the consumption of liquor. When the District SP came to know of the inebriated cop, he sent a senior officer to the station and a breathalyzer test was conducted. The police officer was found to be drunk at his own station. He was sent to police custody for 14 days. He has been charged under applicable sections of excise and CrPC.
Bihar was declared a dry state as on April 5 in 2016 and a total prohibition rule had been imposed by the state. According to the rule, the consumption of, carrying and dealing with liquor would be met with a punishment of up to 10 years of imprisonment. This incident is the eighth one since 2016 in which a police officer has been convicted of drinking alcohol. It is important to note that not only does the banning of liquor have positive past evidence in terms of reduced crime rates in the state, there is also enough and more evidence about the harmful effects of the substance.
