G20 Summit: China's Xi Jinping No-Show Disappoints President Biden

US President Joe Biden expressed his frustration regarding reports suggesting that his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, has no plans to attend the G-20 summit scheduled to take place in New Delhi this week. When questioned about the indications that Xi might skip the leaders' summit, Biden conveyed his disappointment during a press briefing in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on Sunday.
Without specifying a location, Biden mentioned his hope to have a future meeting with the Chinese President if Xi doesn't attend the Delhi summit. One potential opportunity for such a meeting might arise in November when the United States hosts the APEC conference in San Francisco.
According to unnamed sources familiar with the preparations for the summit, Xi has chosen not to travel to the Indian capital. This decision comes amidst escalating tensions between China and India, further straining their relationship.
Instead of Xi, it is reported that Chinese Premier Li Qiang will represent China at the summit, although the exact delegate is yet to be officially named. The last conversation between Biden and Xi took place on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Bali, Indonesia, in November. Unfortunately, any progress made during that encounter was overshadowed by an alleged incursion of US airspace by a Chinese surveillance balloon.
Profound disagreements between the two nations persist across various issues, including Taiwan, exacerbated by US lawmakers visiting the island and a visit by Taiwan's president to the US. Additional points of contention involve Biden's restrictions on semiconductor technology exports, allegations of Chinese surveillance originating in Cuba, and the aforementioned balloon incident.
