Just like the characters she portrays on screen, actress Bhumi Pednekar is quite bold and upstanding in her real life as well. On numerous occasions, she has opened up her views about issues which need to be changed in the society or in film industry. Recently, the actress advocated the idea of removing gender based categories in award shows in order to accept gender diversity.
Bhumi said, "I have always felt that gender must not be important to determine the value of an artiste’s skill or creation. Artistes should be celebrated solely because of their body of work and not by how they choose to identify themselves.” Bhumi's statement came after Brits Awards changed the categories from Best Male/Female Solo Artiste Of The Year to Best Solo Artist Of The Year.
Talking about this decision, Bhumi said, "We have to ensure that our society acknowledges gender diversity. I laud the Brit Awards. It is a step in the right direction and shows across the world will soon follow suit.” She concluded by saying, "We should also keep in mind that while we try to be more inclusive, it should not lead to less representation or less inclusion of genders in a world that is governed by the binary lens. That would be counterproductive to equality.”
