Bernie Sanders, the US Senator and Democratic candidate for President of the US, has waded into the polarized debate over the Delhi violence that has left over 27 dead.
Taking to Twitter, Sanders, who is likely to challenge Donald Trump in this year's presidential elections, said, "Over 200 million Muslims call India home. Widespread anti-Muslim mob violence has killed at least 27 and injured many more. Trump responds by saying, "That's up to India." This is a failure of leadership on human rights."
Curiously, a top BJP functionary has warned Sanders after this tweet! BL Santosh, National General Secretary of BJP, "How much ever neutral we wish to be you compel us to play a role in Presidential elections. Sorry to say so ... But you are compelling us." This has been described by some commentators as an "interesting exchange".
Many on the Indian side have taken Sanders' unwarranted comment very seriously. Journalist Smita Prakash said, "Bernie Sanders has a problem with Trump saying "that's up to India". I am sure he will not have a problem then when Putin tries to solve the issues of Americans in America in the next few months."
Journalist Aditya Raj Kaul remarked that Bernie Sanders is using Indian Muslims to win elections in the United States. "Lies, Deceit and Deception. He doesn't mention the truth about it being a communal riot and both Hindus and Muslims being victims of the deadly violence. One-sided narrative for cheap electoral gains," Kaul tweeted out.
