Recent rumours doing the rounds on social media claimed that Virat Kohli would be stepping down as captain of the Indian cricket team after the T20 World Cup and that current vice-captain Rohit Sharma would be taking Kohli's place as the skipper in the shortest format. BCCI officials have now issued statements on the matter.
BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal denied the reports and said that Virat Kohli would continue to remain captain of all three formats. "This is all rubbish. Nothing (as) such is happening. This is all what you guys (media) are talking about. BCCI has not met or discussed anything on this issue (split captaincy). Virat will remain as the captain (of all formats)," the BCCI treasurer was quoted as saying by a news agency. A report published earlier claimed that Virat wanted to step down as the captain and focus on his batting.
A news agency earlier quoted as its sources as saying, "Virat himself will make the announcement. He is of the view that he needs to concentrate on his batting and go back to becoming what he’s always been — the best batsman in the world." Following Arun Dhumal, BCCI secretary Jay Shah refuted the claims as well. "There is no such proposal and the team is led by Virat and we are backing him. As long as a team is performing while on the crease, the question of change in captaincy doesn’t arise," he said.
