The bandh called upon by the Joint Action Committe in the Telangana region on the 20th certainly affected the business of Sankranthi releases in the Nizam area. Theatres wore a deserted look in the region, with the three successful releases - Namo Venkatesa, Adhurs and Shambo Shiva Shambo, losing big money owing to the unexpected bandh.

The JAC gave a call for a period of 48 hours, after an Osmania University student set himself on fire on the 19th. However, it was not certain whether there was going to be a bandh on the 21st.

As this is the first week for all the releases, the loss has been higher than usual. With all the three doing well at the box office, complete bandh in the region meant loss to the tune of crores.

With the JAC setting a deadline of January 28 for the Centre to spell out its decision on the Statehood issue, bandhs are still expected to mar the normal life and the box office in the region, in case the latter makes a delay in making a statement on the final decision.
