It is a difficult gamble to recreate on film, a masterpiece work like 'Balyakalasakhy'. Though his debut film, Pramod Payyanur famous for his theatre works has attempted this risk and emerged quite successful in revisiting the characters that remains immortal in the many.

The movie , as everyone know , tells the intimate story of  Majeed played by Mammootty and Suhara played by Isha Talwar who have been in love ever since they were kids. The movie told in flashbacks tracks the  story from their childhood days where Mammootty and Meena, playing the roles of Majeed's parents.

The movie is an impressive entertainer particularly in the first half. The flashbacks and innocent faces of the small children enliven the proceedings, though the second half is a bit messy. The performance are uniformly good with Mammootty, taking the lion's share of the proceedings. He plays his  part well and is especially brilliant as the father of Majeed .He takes  takes  special care not to overact  and raises the tempo of the sequences appropriately. Seema Biswas shines as Selvi, who helps Majeed after he reaches Kolkatta. The rest of the cast, including Isha Talwar, Meena, Sasi Kumar and Tanushree Ghosh, are also ok in their roles.

The technical sides are good with fine visuals and editing. The songs particularly the 'Thaamrapoonkavanathil...' is exceptional and is wisely picturised .

Altogether Balyakalasakhy is successful as a cinematic recreation but fails in its emotional content. The movie is an able watch for serious viewers and is also a clean film for film viewers. surprisingly, the movie seems to be 20 minutes less than its censored version.
