Indian Badminton champion Saina Nehwal is now in politics. The 29-year-old shuttling icon will on Wednesday join the BJP in Delhi in the presence of party heavyweights.
Born in Haryana, she became the world's number 1 in 2015. A recipient of Padma Bhushan, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award, Saina has to her credit 24 international titles.
Saina is likely to campaign for the BJP ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. Her popularity will be deployed by the party to woo young voters.
After biggies like Gautam Gambhir (who is an MP from Delhi), BJP has one more super-popular sportsperson in its kitty. Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag are perceived to be BJP-leaning. It's only a matter of time before they join the saffron party. Wrestlers Babita Phogat and Yogeshwar Dutt joined the BJP before the 2019 Haryana elections.
