Haryana-born Badminton champion Saina Nehwal joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today, days ahead of the assembly elections in Delhi.

Wearing the BJP scarf, Saina stated, "I have won medals for the country. I am very hard working and I love hardworking persons. I can see Prime Minister Narendra Modi does so much for the country, I want to do something for the country with him. I draw a lot of inspiration from Narendra sir." Saina was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2016.

Being one of the most famous sports personalities in India, Saina enjoys a huge fanbase. The Olympic bronze medalist has also been honoured with the country's top sporting awards, including the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award. East Delhi's MP and former cricketer Gautam Gambhir joined the BJP last year.
