The teaser of the film “Bad Girl,” produced by directors Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap, has sparked intense debates on social media. Directed by debutant Varsha Bharathi and starring Anjali Sivaraman in the lead role, the teaser was released last Sunday.
The teaser begins with a teenage girl expressing her desire to have a boyfriend. It then progresses through glimpses of her family, love life, first kiss, post-school journey, and self-discovery. The film is set to be screened at the 54th International Film Festival in Rotterdam.
Director Pa. Ranjith shared the teaser on his platform and commented, “I watched ‘Bad Girl.’ It’s truly a bold and refreshing film. Kudos to Vetrimaaran for producing such a courageous story. The movie portrays women’s struggles and societal expectations powerfully through a unique new-wave cinematic approach. Congratulations to Varsha.”
In response, Director Mohan G retweeted and criticized, “To this group, portraying the personal life of a Brahmin girl is always deemed bold and refreshing. What more to expect from Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap? Avenging Brahmin parents isn’t a new trend. Why not create such films with women from your own caste and show them to your families?”
This sparked significant debates on social media. One side accused filmmakers of trendily undermining the Brahmin community, while the other defended the teaser, resulting in a heated discussion.
