The ridiculously popular and viral children's song 'Baby Shark,' recorded by Seoul-based production company Pinkfong in South Korea, has replaced the famous Spanish song 'Despacito,' by Luis Fonsi, to become the most-watched video on YouTube with over seven billion views.
'Baby Shark,' which was originally uploaded on YouTube in 2016, became a global viral sensation shortly after its release, owing to its catchy tunes and lyrics, combined with a colourful video. The children's song is a remix of an American campfire song by the company Pinkfong. "Nursery rhymes have always been sort of slow, very cute, but something that would help your children fall asleep - as opposed to Baby Shark. Pinkfong's Baby Shark is very trendy and it has a very bright beat with fun dance moves. The animation is very vivid. We call it K-Pop for the next generation," Pinkfong's marketing director Jamie Oh reportedly informed a news agency in 2018. 'Baby Shark' currently has precisely 7.05 billion views on YouTube while 'Despacito' has 7.03 billion views.
The children's song initially became popular in the South-east Asian region and eventually went viral across the United States and Europe as well. 'Baby Shark' also made it to the number 32 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 last year.
