Authorities in the State are tense at the sudden inspection carried out at a few refugee camps by a Central team.

The BJP-led Centre has dispatched a team of officials to inspect the few Sri Lankan refugee camps. The team landed up at the Lankan refugee camp situated at Rengapuram in Tirunelveli District. The members of the team interacted with the in-mates and the officials managing the camp.

Refugees submitted a few petitions to the team in which they sought transport facility by ship to enable them to go back to their country of origin along with their belongings. They also wanted the Governments of India and Sri Lanka to ensure that the refugees returning back to Lanka are provided all life-sustaining facilities and livelihood rights that they were enjoying prior to their migration.

“Those wanting to stay in India should be given citizenship; toilet facilities should be provided properly along with road/street-light facilities. Only 70 out of the 84 families had houses of their own; remaining families should be given pucca houses sponsored by the Kudankulam Nuclrear Power Plant officials; we also want a separate burial ground,” were among the requests put forward by the refugees.
