Sharwanand says that 'Ranarangam' is doing pretty well at the box-office. In this interview, catch him talk about what he has felt after reading the reviews on the movie, his upcoming movies and more.

Audience are loving it

Nobody who has watched the movie has said that it's not good. The average audience is happy with the content. I wish the reviews were favourable, though.

Wanted to try the genre

I loved the screenplay and that's why I evinced interest in the script. Sudheer Varma's stylized narration is also something I loved. I have done family films, comedies, etc. Since 'Ranarangam' offered me two variations and the genre is different for me, I wanted to do it. As an actor, I am very happy. Everybody has said that my looks are very good.

Learning from Chiranjeevi

It's not like I wanted to play a gangster. I wanted to do this kind of action film. Personally, I liked the middle-aged man's getup, which automatically helped me sink to the role. The young version is partly influenced by Chiranjeevi garu's mannerisms. It's not like I imitated him but I inculcated that body language subtly.

Story is not strong

We never said that the story is new. It's a screenplay-based, stylized movie. A few things have backfired. And other things have worked well. I need time to gauge what all went wrong.

I have always been lauded for choosing the right stories. This is the first time that I have done a movie without keeping the story in mind.

Reviews are negative

When I read the reviews, I did feel bad that some things haven't been received well. There is a big difference in the way the audience are seeing the film. The collections are good. Had the reviews been positive, the collections would have been even better.

Violence was to be expected

The trailer itself made it clear that there is action and violence in the movie. We got U/A certificate, which means that children can watch it under parental guidance. We never mislead the audience with regard to content.

No justification needed

We have not justified the actions of the hero in the story. The audience want different stories. Some stories work and others don't. The director has told the story without a back story as to why the hero does smuggling in 'Ranarangam'. We intentionally took that route. That has partly backfired. Since the hero's character is always expected to be ideal, we should have shown justification for his actions.

I am confused

I am confused regarding the judgement of film critics. They have disliked the movie but everywhere, people are telling me that I should continue to make movies like 'Ranarangam'. The lifetime box-office figures will tell who is right and who is wrong. I never think that the media is biased against me. Most reviews have said that 'Ranarangam' has no strong story. I agree with them. I expected the reviews to say that the screenplay is excellent. But they didn't say that.

Film critics do their job pretty much well. I need to ascertain what exactly went wrong with the screenplay. I have to review my own film. I am happy with the collections.

Will try different genres

After doing 'Prasthanam', I tried other genres. After 'Shatamanam Bhavati', I did a comedy film. I will keep trying different genres. '96' and 'Srikaram' are story-driven films. I will be doing a Telugu-Tamil bilingual. To me, every script should be different. Otherwise, the audience would be bored. I go by my instinct. As an actor, I want to try new kind of roles.
