Recent reports suggested that the organizers of Tokyo Olympics had equipped the Olympic Village with cardboard beds that would collapse under the weight of more than one person or any vigorous activity. It was also reported that the arrangement was made in an attempt to discourage athletes from having intercourse.

However, an Irish gymnast, named Rhys McClenaghan, filmed a video of himself jumping on one of those beds to prove that the reports regarding "anti-sex beds" were fake news, adding that the beds were indeed quite sturdy. "The beds are meant to be anti-sex. They're made out of cardboard, yes, but apparently they're meant to break with sudden movements. It's fake — fake news!" McClenaghan mentioned alongside the video he had posted on Twitter.

The organizers confirmed that the beds will be recycled into paper products after the Games, with the mattress components recycled into new plastic products. "This will be the first time in Olympic and Paralympic history that all beds and bedding are made almost entirely from renewable materials," a source reportedly revealed. The beds, which were first introduced in January 2020, also aimed at promoting the idea of social distancing.

It all started when Rio Olympics silver medallist in 5000 metres, Paul Chelimo, wrote a Twitter thread about the sleeping setup. Sharing pictures of the beds, Chelimo wrote, "Beds to be installed in Tokyo Olympic Village will be made of cardboard, this is aimed at avoiding intimacy among athletes. Beds will be able to withstand the weight of a single person to avoid situations beyond sports. I see no problem for distance runners, even 4 of us can do."

"Those who pee on the bed are at risk here, once the carton box is wet the bed falls over esp it will suck if its a night before finals. At this point I will have to start practicing how to sleep on the floor; cause If my bed collapses and I have no training on sleeping on the floor i'm done. More added stress heading into Tokyo!" he added.
