West Bengal police raided the Patlaybas office of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha party early today and recovered a huge stash of arrows, crackers, axes, a country-made pistol, Khukris and cash. Following the raids, which took place in three places, the Central Committee of the party announced an indefinite strike.
The police said they recovered "sophisticated bows and arrows" as well as "materials which look like bomb-making ingredients," among other firearms and contraband. Clashes broke out as an immediate response to the raids and a police outpost in Kalimpong was torched by protestors. Slogans of Darjeeling turning into another Kashmir were heard.
The GJM`s Women Morcha rallies were scheduled to be carried out today, but the police raids put an end to supporters gathering under any pretext.
